Sara Termeijer

In this project, three lamps are made based on different neighbourhoods of the city of Rotterdam. All lamps are handmade using recycled electric wire.

The lamp Sara Termeijer is based on the neighbourhood Katendrecht. This neighbourhood used to be a place with many prostitutes. All the seamen went here to go out, and it was an unsafe place to be. The black rubber wire, the red light, and the print on the rubber express this wild nightlife. Today, it is one of the safest neighbourhoods of Rotterdam, where many families with children live. The copper wire, which is oxidised, expresses this sense of safety. The wire is knitted, which also gives it a playful character.

Sara is the most popular girls’ name in Rotterdam. “Termeijer” refers to prostitute in the Rotterdam dialect.
