In this project, three lamps are made based on different neighbourhoods of the city of Rotterdam. All lamps are handmade using recycled electric wire.
The lamp Befgajes Maas is based on the neighbourhood Nieuwe Werk. Back in the days, this neighbourhood was a rich harbour. The knitted plastic wires represent the old ropes, which typically have the colours orange and brown. Today, this neighbourhood is a place with many lawyers. There are many old buildings because this area was not bombed during the war. The copper wire expresses this chic and classic style.
“Befgajes” is another word for someone with judicial power in the Rotterdam dialect. “Maas” is the name of the channel where the harbour is.
